Stonington, CT — January 25, 2026 — At 4:52 a.m., Westerly Dispatch alerted volunteer crews to respond with the Aqua Eye to the Stonington Town Dock, at the request of Car 31. Squad 3 responded promptly with a full crew.
Upon arrival, crews deployed the Aqua Eye and operated in two-person teams outfitted in Mustang Ice Commander survival suits, working from the NRS ASR 155 rescue boat to conduct a systematic search for a reported victim in the water. Despite extremely challenging weather conditions, responders worked for several hours in a coordinated multi-agency effort. Westerly Fire Department operated alongside the following agencies: • Stonington Borough Fire Dept • Pawcatuck Fire Department • Old Mystic Fire Department • Taftville/Yantic Dive Team • Stonington Police Department • Connecticut State Police • United States Coast Guard • Stonington Ambulance Corps, Inc.
We would like to thank Providence Canteen for providing much-needed food and beverages to responders during the operation.
The Westerly Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
