At approximately 9:15 am on Sunday May 21, 2023 Westerly Firefighters were dispatched to the Potter Hill Landing for a bridge smoking. Upon arrival firefighters discovered the old cow bridge spanning the Pawcatuck River was indeed smoking. It was evident that a person or persons unknown had lit a campfire on the bridge’s concrete deck near a seam. Ashes had dropped down into the old wooden decking and substructure and began to slowly burn the wooden decking. Firefighters attempted to reach the fire from the deck of the bridge but could not effectively place the water to completely extinguish the fire. Marine 30 was requested as well as additional water cans so the fire could be extinguished. Marine 30 was launched at the landing and the process of extinguishing the fire from underneath the bridge began. Members operating on Marine 30 were switched out and extinguishment was completed. Westerly Fire units on scene were Engines 3 and 4, Cars 31,33 34, 395, and 396, and WT-3 with Marine 30. Also responding to this incident were Westerly and Hopkinton Police as well as RI DEM and the RI State Fire Marshal. Units cleared the scene around 11:00 am.
