| The Westerly Fire Department has acquired the AquaEye Pro, a state-of-the-art handheld sonar that will soon be added to its water rescue capabilities. Over the past two weeks, our volunteers have completed extensive training on the device, and additional drills are planned before it is officially placed into service.
The AquaEye Pro uses advanced sonar and AI to rapidly detect people underwater in lakes, ponds, rivers, or coastal waters. It can scan up to 8,000 m² in minutes, highlight potential human targets, and provide rescuers with direction, distance, and depth. This technology shortens search times, improves accuracy, and enhances safety for both rescuers and the community.
Training will also extend beyond Westerly, as the department works with neighboring fire districts to ensure the AquaEye Pro can serve as a regional asset, available to surrounding communities whenever needed.
The purchase and training were supported by Water Training Resources, a Wallingford, CT–based organization specializing in water rescue education. The company provided train-the-trainer instruction, ensuring Westerly’s firefighters are prepared to operate and teach others on the new sonar.
“The AquaEye Pro allows us to begin underwater searches immediately, giving us greater speed and accuracy when every second counts,” said Lt. Justin Izzi, Westerly Fire Department Rescue Lieutenant. “By training with nearby departments, we’re ensuring this tool is ready to benefit not only Westerly but our entire region.”
“It’s an honor to support Westerly Fire Department with both the AquaEye Pro and the training needed to maximize its potential,” said Dan Comen, Owner of Water Training Resources. “Our goal is to provide agencies with the tools and knowledge to make the fastest, safest rescues possible.”
This new addition reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to training, readiness, and the use of advanced technology to better serve Westerly and its surrounding communities. |
