It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that the Westerly Fire Department announces the passing of Retired Chief of Department Joseph A. Misto Sr., age 89.

Chief Misto proudly served the members and citizens of the Westerly Fire District for decades, including his tenure as Chief of Department from 1991 to 2002. He was a devoted member of Alert Hook & Ladder Company No. 1, serving as Foreman from 1977 to 1978. Over the course of his distinguished career, he rose through the officer ranks with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to service.

Chief Misto was a respected leader who helped shape the department into what it is today. His leadership was marked by compassion, thoughtful innovation, and pride in the fire service. He mentored generations of firefighters and officers, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to serve alongside him. His involvement extended beyond the department through his membership in the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association and the New England Fire Chiefs Association.

Above all else, Chief Misto was a man devoted to family, faith, and community. He was known for his kindness, quick wit, and ability to connect with anyone he met. His legacy is one of service, humility, and steadfast dedication to the people of Westerly.

In honor of Chief Misto’s lifelong service, the Westerly Fire Department will stand Honor Guard throughout his wake on Friday, February 13, conduct a department walk-through at 1700 hours, and will also stand Honor Guard outside St. Pius Church during the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 14.

The members of the Westerly Fire Department extend our deepest condolences to the Misto family, his friends, and all who knew and loved him. Chief Misto’s service and leadership will never be forgotten.

May he rest in peace
